Kids Room Furniture

Functional and fun

Furnishing a kids bedroom can be one of the most creative home decorating projects you'll encounter in a redesign. Kids room accessories, such as funky throw pillows and table lamps , are plentiful and very affordable. Kids furniture is often brightly colored and incorporates fun fabrics and textures, so it's easy to get overexcited and come home with too much furniture, but there are a few pieces that make every kids room complete.

The Basics

First and foremost on the list of important kids furniture is a toy box (also known as a toy chest). Toy boxes come in a variety of materials, from plastic to melamine to wood, but whatever you choose, be sure it's made to last. For durability, solid wood is definitely your best choice, and you'll find it's also very affordable.

You can spruce up an ordinary toy chest by painting it to match your decor, or having it personalized with your child's name in wooden letters. Another fun design option would be to paint the top of the toy chest (inside or out) with chalkboard paint so your child will have a canvas to draw on. Or for additional seating, add a removable pillow to the top of the toy box for your child and his or her friends to sit on.

Kids dressers are another must-have item, to help contain the socks and shirts that somehow end up strewn around the room. Like toy boxes, you'll also find them in various materials, but it's even more important to choose something sturdy in this instance. A wooden dresser with sliding casters on the drawers will make it easy for your child to access the contents on their own. If the dresser is tall, be sure to secure it to the wall to prevent tipping.

Other Kids Room Furniture:

Kids Beds

Your choice on a bed for kids is going to come down to size. A twin bed is ideal, but if your children share a room, bunk beds may be a more practical choice over two twin beds. Another space-saving solution is kids trundle beds, which allow one bed and mattress to tuck neatly under the other when not in use. If you need storage space, a kids loft bed provides ample room underneath for a dresser or toy box, while kids storage beds can substitute for either of those pieces.

If you're looking for fun over function, kids water beds are still a popular choice. For little boys, a car bed is a great piece to build a theme around, while any little girl who loves fairy tales will be thrilled with a princess bed or a canopy bed. Top off each bed with bright and fun kids bedding in their favorite theme and your child will be happy to go to sleep at night!

Kids Desks

For children who are a little older, you may want to consider including a kids desk so he or she can have a quiet place for homework. In today's high-tech world, a kids computer desk is a great choice for even young children, as parents are allowing kids to use many educational games in their rooms.

If your child is not yet in school, a childrens desk can still be a smart decision. A ki...
